Frozen Fruit Smoothies

SmoothiesA fruity smoothie is a delicious and nutritious way to start the day, or follow up a workout. If you have the time and inclination to chop and whizz your own using fresh produce, then gold star for you. (These recipes on NutriLiving should keep you busy.) But if you need a convenient and quick option, then frozen-fruit smoothies are the answer.

When fruit is flash-frozen it doesn’t lose any of its antioxidants, making it as good for you as fresh fruit (just as many vitamins and caretinoids that fight free radicals and protect against cancer). You can read some research here and here. Frozen fruit is tasty, too, because it’s frozen at its peak ripeness. Plus your smoothie will be perfectly chilled without the need to add ice. What’s not to like?

Here are a couple of my favourite recipes. My prep time PB for number one is 2 minutes 13 seconds. See if you can beat it!

Strawberry Cool

Ingredients

1 handful frozen banana and strawberry mix
1 glass apple juice

Method

Put smoothie mix and apple juice into a blender and whizz until smooth
Pour into a tumbler
Top with blueberries (optional)

Superberry

Ingredients

1 handful frozen berry mix
3 tablespoons natural yoghurt
A large splash of milk
honey to taste

Method

Put the berry mix, the yoghurt and milk into a blender and whizz until smooth
Add a squeeze of honey for sweetness
Pour into a tumbler
Top with blueberries (optional)
You can whizz some oats into this one to make it a bulkier meal
